Black Lives Matter

A lot transpired in the Board Game community yesterday. In case you missed it, Origins Online has been cancelled (also Kotaku article) due to their silence on the Black Lives Matter movement.

After waking up to this news, I felt it was my duty to post our support at Rock Manor Games as well. We stand with everyone in support of Black Lives Matter, and if you thought anything different, you haven’t been paying much attention to our games where we go out of our way to foster diversity in our games, artwork, etc wherever possible.

Anyways, I thought it was important to take a moment out of my day to not only acknowledge this incredible civil rights movement, but also applaud the people in our industry that spoke out yesterday:

One of the things I am bummed about with Origins Online being cancelled is that our publisher/designer pitching thing is cancelled along with it. I know Rock Manor Games isn’t all the influential, but if you are Person of Color or identify as Female and have a game you are looking to get published, please reach out to me. I would love to hear your pitch and we don’t require any previous experience in the games industry. All you need is a great game that fits our brand.

Finally, I just want to share this great article that I found over the weekend on Polygon on How to Support Black Lives Matter: https://www.polygon.com/2020/6/2/21278117/how-to-support-black-lives-matter-george-floyd-protests-donate-volunteer-police-brutality. There are tons of great causes that you can donate or get involved in.

I’m unbelievably disappointed. The BLM movement is not a movement for black lives, but political social upheaval. This movement brought violence into my community, distorts or omits facts to incite anger at police, and ignores the lives of blacks negatively affected by their own actions or other non-political causes. I stand with black individuals as members of our society and support the law enforcement we need to protect us all from the angry children who riot in the streets for their own selfish gain. Whether you support them out of ignorance of their actual goals, or because you are a true believer, you will receive no more business from me.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized political and social movement advocating for non-violent civil disobedience in protest against incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people. If you truly stand with black people of our society, you should acknowledge that they are disproportionately killed by police because of systemic racism. Furthermore white supremacy/privilege persists and is a problem in our society. Replies such as this one and specifically, “ignores the lives of blacks negatively affected by their own actions” display the very real unconscious biases and misinformation around the BLM movement. It’s as political as the Civil Rights Movement so if you oppose it, you’re on the wrong side of history.
